Physical and chemical changes in matter
Matter can change in state, in shape, in position and in texture. This is what we are going to study today. PAY ATTENTION!!
INTRODUCTION
Physical changes
Chemical changes
Changes in matter
FOLLOW THESE STEPS
Step 4: video + activities
Step 3: Chemical changes
PLANNING
Step 2: Physical changes
Step 1: Read pages 86 and 87
Step 1: reading
Please, open your book on page 86 and 87 and read them. Read the two sections: physical changes on page 86 and chemical changes on page 87.
READING
PHYSICAL CHANGES
In physical changes of matter, the appearance of the matter changes, but not its nature. Physical changes can be REVERSIBLE or IRREVERSIBLE. - REVERSIBLE CHANGES: can be undone or irreversible. - IRREVERSIBLE CHANGES: are permanent and cannot be undone
PHYSICAL CHANGE
En los cambios físicos, cambia la apariencia de la materia, pero no su naturaleza o sus propiedades
PHYSICAL CHANGES: Reversible changes
They can be undone (pueden deshacerse)
PHYSICAL CHANGE
Melted chocolate can be solid again by cooling it
To make an origami figure, you make many folds in a piece of paper. The material has a different shape, but it is still paper and has the same properties
We can freeze orange juice into ice lollies. The ice lollies can be changed back into a liquid by heating them
PHYSICAL CHANGES: Irreversible changes
They are permanent. They cannot be undone (Son permanentes, no pueden deshacerse)
PHYSICAL CHANGE
If we cut bread, we cannot put the slices back into a loaf
Sharpening a pencil is irreversible because you cannot put the pencil shavings back onto the pencil
If we break a glass, we cannot put the pieces back together
CHEMICAL CHANGES
Chemical reactions change the PROPERTIES of the original substance, and a new substance is created. For example, when wood, it is transformed into other substances. These new substances include ashes and smoke and have different properties from the original wood. Three of the most important changes are: OXIDATION, COMBUSTION and FERMENTATION
Chemical Changes
En las reacciones o cambios físicos , la materia cambia de propiedades y se convierte en una nueva sustancia. Por ejemplo, cuando quemamos madera, se crean otras sustancias como ceniza o humo.
Oxidation
Combustion
Chemical Changes
Oxidation takes place when certain substances react with the oxygen in the air and they change into other substances. For example, when apple combines with oxygen, it oxides and turns brown
Combustion produces LIGHT and HEAT. Combustion happens when oxygen in the air reacts with a fuel. For example, during wood combustion, fuel turns into heat, ash and smoke
Fermentation
Chemical changes
Fermentation takes place when certain substances change into other substances because of the action of microbes. For example, we make yoghurt, cheese... by fermenting milk
