Le prétérit en be-ing : la formation

Comme il existe une version en be-ing (aussi appelée "continue") du présent, il existe aussi une version en be-ing du prétérit.

Pour la former, il suffira de se baser sur la formation du présent en be-ing et mettre l'auxiliaire be au prétérit.

Le prétérit en be-ing : la formation

→ Forme affirmative (+) : sujet + was \ were + BV-ing Ex : Eboshi was shooting with her bow. → Forme négative (-) : sujet + was \ were + not + BV-ing Ex : Ashitaka wasn't playing by the rules. → Forme interrogative (?) : (mot en wh-) was \ were + sujet + BV-ing Ex : Were Okkoto and his army trying to defeat Mononoke? Where was he going?

Le prétérit en be-ing : l'emploi

Si le présent en be-ing, sert à énoncer une action en cours de déroulement...

... alors le prétérit en be-ing, sert à énoncer une action en cours de déroulement dans le passé.

Cette action en cours de déroulement va souvent être interrompue par une action ponctuelle, au prétérit simple.

Ex : Eboshi was shooting with her bow... when a warrior spotted her. Ashitaka wasn't playing by the rules... when the goddess decided to stop him. Where was Okkoto trying to go... when he jumped over the bridge?
