REPORTS: Narrowing a topic
A research report is a kind of expository writing. When you write a report, you gather information about your topic from a variety of resources. Then you take what you have learned, organize the information, and write about it in a way that your audience will understand.
Write it on your notebook
KEEP THREE THINGS IN MIND
Select a topic that you care about
Narrow the topic so that you can cover it thoroughly
Make sure that you can find several sources on your topic
Narrowing
The diagram in the picture shows how you can focus on a topic. A focus on outdoor sports is too broad. There are too many outdoor sports to cover thoroughly. You can narrow the topic by focusing on a single sport - bycicling. But even this narrowed topic includes too much information. You can thoroughly cover one aspect of bycicling - bycicling safety, for example - in one report.
Activity
What are your favorite sports or games? On your notebook, make a triangle diagram like the one in the previous slide to identify which aspect of the one sport or game you enjoy most.
