Global Congestion Then & Now
COROnavirus edition
As governments across the globe order their citizens to stay at home, we take a look at the impact COVID-19 is having on congestion in some of the world's busiest cities.
The Figures
TomTom calculate baseline figures by analysing free-flow travel times of all vehicles on the roads of each city, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This information allows them to calculate the average amount of time a driver will spend in traffic on a typical day in any given city. Congestion level = 75% congestion means that a 30 minute trip will take 75% longer than during baseline uncongested conditions. Travel time = 0.75 x 30 = 22.5 mins extra average travel time. 30 mins + 22.5 mins = 52.5 mins total average travel time. In order to calculate the average figures for April 2019 & April 2020, we took a 7-day snapshot of peak time traffic in April 2019 and the same period of April 2020. Analyising hour-by hour data, and using TomToms congestion and travel time formulas, we were able to identify peak travel times throughout the 7 day period and calculate a mean average of rush hour travel times for each city for both April 2019 & 2020.
