PREHISTORY

From the first hominids to the invention of writing

IT BEGAN 2,5 MILLIONS OF YEARS AGO

No matter what you may have seen in the movies, early man did not live during the same period in history as dinosaurs!

Dinosaurs died out about 65 million years ago. The first human like hominids did not appear until around 2,5 million years ago and prehistory began.

Very Early Humans

It was during this time that early man, first appeared.

How do scientists know about an early man who lived 2,5 million years ago?

Lucy told them!

Lucy

In 1974, a skeleton was found in Africa. The bones were those of a female, about 20 years old or so when she died. Scientists named her Lucy.

Archaeologists are like detectives. They can tell a great deal from a skeleton, whether it's one year old or 2,5 million years old!

Archeologists study artefacts like: coins, ruins, pottery, tools, paintings, weapons and jewellery to learn about how people lived in the past.

STONE AGE. PALAEOLITHIC

  • Archeologists found the oldest human remains in Spain in Atapuerca (Burgos).
  • This arqueological site gave them a lot of information about how palaeolithic people looked like and how they lived.

STONE AGE. PALAEOLITHIC

Palaeolithic people painted cave paintings. In the Altamira Cave in Cantabria important paintings were discovered. The original paintings cannot be seen but we can see a replica of them in the museum next to it.

STONE AGE. PALEOLITHIC

They made very simple tools out of stones, bones and wood. They discovered fire.

STONE AGE. PALEOLITHIC

  • Humans living during the Paleolithic Era were hunter-gatherers.
  • This means they moved around hunting animals and gathering plants to eat.

STONE AGE. PALEOLITHIC

Hunting and gathering did not always provide the people with a steady supply of food.If there were no animals and plants where the people were the people would have to leave to find plants and animals to eat. This made them be nomads.

STONE AGE. PALEOLITHIC

  • Paleolithic people lived in temporary shelters like tents or caves because they were nomads.
  • A nomad is a person who does not have a permanent home and moves around a lot.

STONE AGE. PALEOLITHIC

Paleolithic people lived in small groups of no more than 60 people because being nomadic made living in large groups difficult..

STONE AGE. MESOLITHIC

The transition period between the Paleolithic and Neolithic. It was a gradual process. They not only used stone tools but also polished

STONE AGE. NEOLITHIC

They started to grow crops and domesticate animals. Agriculture and farming began in the Neolithic Era.

Humans cultivated wheat. They would harvest it, grind it up, and use that to make other foods!

STONE AGE. NEOLITHIC

Neolithic people learned how to farm and domesticate animals. Domesticate means to train a wild animal to be useful to humans.

Sheep were among the first animals to be domesticated by humans!

STONE AGE. NEOLITHIC

Neolithic people were not nomadic. They settled down in towns and built houses because they were able to farm and needed to be close to their fields.

STONE AGE. NEOLITHIC

They began to form villages around the fields they farmed and they learned how to make many new things like: pottery, bigger houses, better clothing, and stronger tools. Even women started to use makeup

Neolithic Homesite

STONE AGE. NEOLITHIC

Once people began building houses and they began to live in villages life was easier. They divided up the work; some people farmed, some took care of animals, some built houses, some made tools, some made clothing, some made pottery, and others traded.

METAL AGE. COPPER AGE

The main change was the Discovery of metals and their uses. They started using copper, they melted it and made stronger weapons. The first state societies emerged ruled by powerful leaders. The division of tasks started in the Neolithic period continued: farmers, traders, metal workers...

METAL AGE. BRONZE AGE

They discovered by adding tin (estaño) to copper a new metal stronger and harder than copper. With the discovery of bronze, weapons ands tools improved becoming stronger and harder than copper ones.

Population increased and the first cities appeared

METAL AGE. IRON AGE

With the discovery or Iron and steel higher quality and stronger weapons were made

Although gold and silver were discovered in previous periods, the used them in the Iron age to make coins and jewellery pieces

Bigger cities fortified with high walls for protection were created.

First Ancient civilizations like the Celts and the Iberians started their development during this period.

METAL AGE IN SPAIN.

Two main tribes inhabited the iberian península during the metal age: The Celts and the Iberians

Oh no! You have woken up trapped in a cave. There is a giant stone blocking the exit and the only way to get out is by using the secret password. You will need to find all the letters and unscramble them to discover the password. Each letter can be found by solving the clues hidden around the cave.

SOLVE

What is the password?

Unscramble the letters you got from each clue to make the password to open the cave. (Hint: it's something from this chapter!)
