The music is characterized by the use of the well-known "gaita", a kind of bagpipe and percussion instruments as the "tamboril", a snare drum which is played with two sticks. The "tamboril" is typically found as accompaniment to bagpipes. The "pandeireta" is a large tambourine that is played in small groups. A pair of vieira shells, "cunchas", are rubbed together. The "bombo" is a bass drum played with one stick. Finally, the "pandeiro" is a double faced square frame drum, similar to the Portuguese and Castillan adufe. The most common type of traditional music of Galicia is the "muiñeira". Other types of music are "jota" and "pasodoble". "Baile" is the term for social dances.
