TRAPPED IN THE MALL
Start
INTRODUCTION
The city mall has been closed down because of a cockroach infestation. You and your friends are the only ones still in the mall as you were hypnotised by the ads in one of the shops and didn't realize the whole building had been evacuated and locked up...
THE MISSION
The pest control unit has asked you to open that safe so that the roach poison can be spread throughout the mall, the infestation can be stopped, and the stores can open back up for business. Your mission - if you choose to accept it - is to explore the different shops in order to find the numbers to open the safe. If you accept the mission, click on the arrow.
The city's pest control unit has run out of poison, but they know that there is a supply locked away in a safe inside the mall. As you and your friends are still inside the mall, and the pest control unit is very afraid of cockroaches, they have asked for your help in locating the poison supply so that you can put a stop to the infestation.

third conditional
Remember that conditionals are used to talk about the condition needed for a result to happen. In the case of third conditional, it is used to talk about a result that did not happen in the past because the condition was not met before. They are called impossible conditionals because it is now impossible that the result happens.

Creating a "Need" to Consume?
The purpose of advertising is to convince people to buy a product or to use a service. The first newspaper ad appeared in 1704. Since then, other ways of advertising have emerged.

Creating a "Need" to Consume?
Consumption is very important for manufacturers and retailers; the more people consume, the better. Advertising promises success and happiness in order to persuade people to consume. In theory, sellers should have to inform buyers in order to help them make good choices. However, they do not always follow this idea. Agencies develop campaigns that appeal to consumers. They create unreal needs that encourage a desire to consume. The success of a campaign has to do with the quality of the ads, instead of the quality of the goods they advertise. Thus, the value of products goes up, thanks to advertising.

Creating a "Need" to Consume?
Publicity tells people what the “model” life would be. After seeing tons of ads with attractive logos, pictures, and information, they become consumers. Many people consume things they don’t want and will hardly use. They buy just because they want to consume what is fashionable. This industry is only interested in persuading people to buy things or to use a service based on their moods and desires. They make people believe that their happiness depends on advertised products.

Creating a "Need" to Consume?
Marketing uses three strategies that come from classical rhetoric. Rhetoric is the art of persuasive speaking and writing. The first strategy used by advertising is called Movere, which means “to move” or “to excite” in Latin. This strategy plays on people’s emotions in order to convince them to buy products. We can see this in slogans such as “Love it until the last drop.” There are many ads that depict people using a product or service in a pleasant atmosphere, conveying a sense of happiness and comfort.

Creating a "Need" to Consume?
The second strategy is Docere, which means “to inform” or “to teach”. This strategy can be seen in ads of products that are supposed to have great properties. There are many TV commercials, known as infomercials, about “magical” products that, for a reasonable price, promise to heal physical features that correspond with certain stereotypes. Infomercials use strategies in order to sound reliable. They mention scientific research regarding the advertised product. But, most of the time, the audience doesn’t think about whether those arguments are true. In fact, they will feel compelled to buy a chair that helps them lose weight just by sitting in it while it makes Hawaiian-style movements. Additionally, infomercials use testimonials of so-called customers who talk about the magnificent benefits of those magical products. For example: “If I hadn’t known about this chair, I wouldn’t have lost 10 pounds in a week”; "If I hadn’t known about this spray, I wouldn’t have grown hair on my scalp”; “If I hadn’t bought this amazing cream, I wouldn’t have lost my wrinkles in less than a month!”

Creating a "Need" to Consume?
The third strategy is Delectere, which means “to entertain and delight”. This strategy can be seen in car ads, for example. In these kinds of ads, people are seen enjoying life while driving a car. The car then becomes essential for people’s enjoyment. Another example is the soda TV commercial. Here, people are practically transformed after drinking soda. They are dancing, singing, or doing other fun activities.

Creating a "Need" to Consume?
In this era of consumption, companies are creating more and more unnecessary products. Frequently, advertising uses hidden messages to direct people to superficial “needs”. It is common to see advertisements showing goods that “make life easier”. Many people are always waiting for the latest model (of a phone, car, etc.) to come out. They want to look as smart or as successful as the person who is advertising the product.

CONCLUSION

Creating a "Need" to Consume?
In conclusion, publicists spend millions of dollars to uniform and manipulate people so they will make bad choices, and it seems they never run out of ideas. If we had known about how publicity works before, we wouldn’t have bought many useless things. Don’t you think?
