Aspects to be considered to write a paragraph
As it is mentioned above, ideas in a paragraph should be developed around a single topic; for this reason, it is important to focus on the elaboration of the Topic and the Topic sentence based on its definition.
• The paragraph is not composed of isolated sentences. They must be related to each other, and all of them linked to the subject. Remember irrelevant sentences should be omitted.
• The whole paragraph must have consistency and cohesion.
A topic sentence is the main sentence (not word) of the paragraph that contains the main idea of it, this sentence is usually placed at the beginning of the paragraph. In other hands, this topic sentence contains the most important or essential information about the paragraph, and secondary ideas are developed about it.
• At the beginning of the paragraph, it is necessary to use indentation (this is the space left between the left margin and the first word of the paragraph).
• The use of capital letter and lowercase must be the correct one (proper names, after periods, etc.).
It is relevant to mention that the terms topic and topic sentence are different, since the first refers to the general theme of the paragraph and is presented in one or more words; whereas, the second one, as I explained before, is the main sentence of the paragraph (it has a sentence structure). For a better understanding of this, I propose you to review the following example:
• Punctuation marks should be located in the correct place and where relevant; that is, you should not abuse their use or omit them where they are necessary. This will allow your message won’t be changed. In a paragraph, the full stop is not used after each sentence, but only at the end of the paragraph.
• Grammar must be applied correctly.
Aspects to be considered to write a paragraph
The main sentence cannot be both the theme of the paragraph because it is more general or broad; on the otter matter, the topic sentence encompasses in a single sentence the main idea of the paragraph. This one is neither very general nor very specific.
Therefore, I recommend you that for writing a supporting sentence, ask yourself what is the direct relationship it has with the topic sentence.
Finally, remember that all sentences must be properly connected to each other (by using of connectors), and placed in the paragraph in such a way that there is a logical sequence of ideas.
Supporting sentences are those next to the topic sentence, which explain the topic sentence with greater specificity. This explanation can be done through examples, details, extra information, etc.
The following chart contains an example taken from the book Ready to Write that will help you better understand the explanation:
It is important that you always keep in mind that supporting sentences, as the word says, are SENTENCES (not single words) that are connected to the topic sentence. Another feature to remember is that you cannot add any secondary sentence that seems to be linked to the topic sentence or to the theme. It must be included only those sentences that are directly related to topic sentence or to the theme, due to not all sentences are relevant in a paragraph because some of them do not correct paragraph because some of them do not correspond to what is the topic sentence about (IRRELEVANT SENTENCES).
