Whole-class teaching

Pros

- A sense of belonging - Suitable for activities where the T is a controller; it increases TTT - T can “gauge the mood” - Preferred in some contexts

Cons

- It favours the group rather than the individual - STT is reduced - It minimizes S responsibility - It hinders communicative activities

individual learning

Pros

- T can respond to SS's needs -Less stressful (for shier or weaker SS) - It may help develop autonomy - It may help restore peace after a noisy activity

Cons

- It doesn’t favour cooperation - It’s more time consuming and demanding for the T

pair work

Pros

Cons

- It increases STT - It promotes learner independence - “2 heads are better than one”- Quick and easy to organize

- It can be (a bit/quite) noisy - SS may deviate from the task - Choosing a partner may be problematic- SS may misbehave

group work

Cons

Pros

- It can be (a bit/quite) noisy /SS turn to L1 - Some SS find themselves in uncongenial groups - Some SS may be passive whereas other dominate - Groups can take longer to organize

- It increases STT - It promotes autonomy - Different opinions and contributions- It fosters skills of cooperation and negotiation
