Whole-class teaching
Pros
- A sense of belonging - Suitable for activities where the T is a controller; it increases TTT - T can “gauge the mood” - Preferred in some contexts
Cons
- It favours the group rather than the individual - STT is reduced - It minimizes S responsibility - It hinders communicative activities
individual learning
Pros
- T can respond to SS's needs -Less stressful (for shier or weaker SS) - It may help develop autonomy - It may help restore peace after a noisy activity
Cons
- It doesn’t favour cooperation - It’s more time consuming and demanding for the T
pair work
Pros
Cons
- It increases STT - It promotes learner independence - “2 heads are better than one”- Quick and easy to organize
- It can be (a bit/quite) noisy - SS may deviate from the task - Choosing a partner may be problematic- SS may misbehave
group work
Cons
Pros
- It can be (a bit/quite) noisy /SS turn to L1 - Some SS find themselves in uncongenial groups - Some SS may be passive whereas other dominate - Groups can take longer to organize
- It increases STT - It promotes autonomy - Different opinions and contributions- It fosters skills of cooperation and negotiation
