Formative assessment is a planned process in which assessment-elicited evidence of students' achievement is used by instructors to adjust their ongoing instructional procedures or by students to adjust their current learning tactics.

Formative assessment is a process used by teachers and students during instruction that provides feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and learning to improve students' achievement of intended instructional outcomes - Formative assessment takes place during instruction - It is usually a “low stakes” or non-graded type of assessment. - Formative assessment is a process, not any particular test. - It provides assessment-based feedback to instructors and students. - The function of this feedback is to help instructors and students make adjustments that will improve students' achievement of intended learning outcomes.

Formative Assessment Purpose and Function

My relevant objectives: - Find out how formative assessment can help student learning - Understand how formative assessment can help to develop personalised learning - Identify competences required to apply formative assessment - Make connections to other course participants - Reflect on my own practice - Investigate the process of learning online

Formative Assessment

Module 01

Formative assessments help teachers identify concepts that students are struggling to understand, skills they are having difficulty acquiring, or learning standards they have not yet achieved so that adjustments can be made to lessons, instructional techniques, and academic support.

Formative assessment refers to a wide variety of methods that teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or course.

1.1 What is formative assessment?

Module 01 FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

A few attributes of formative assessment:- Formative assessments occur during the course, not at the end - Formative assessments are a form of two-way communication providing valuable information for both the student and teacher. - Formative assessments are considered part of the learning, they support learning during the process - Formative assessments can serve as practice for students - Formative assessments help teacher differentiate instruction and thus improve student achievement - Formative assessments can be done using individual, partner, small group, or whole class models.

Differences Between Formative and Summative Assessment

Module 01 FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

In today’s fast-changing world, teachers have the important role of equipping the young generation with the skills and competences for tomorrow’s society. If in the past we often focussed on the transmission of knowledge to students, today we focus on collaboration, problem solving, creativity and self-regulation… all valuable skills to deal with the challenges of today and adapt to the challenges of tomorrow. Moreover, rather than passively listening and taking notes, this shift requires students to be active learners who interact with peers and the outside world, reflect about learning and drive their own learning accordingly.

Could you identify one thing you would like to change/improve in regard to the atmosphere in your classroom, and what youneed to do to achive this?

Do you think students feel safe to make mistakes in your classroom, and how do you know?

Which three adjectives would best describe your classroom culture (e.g. quiet, playful, collaborative)?

2.1 Establishing a classroom culture for formative assessment

Module02 FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT IN PRACTICE

Margaret Heritage of UCLA's National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing, (2014)

“Feedback that the teacher provides to students is also an essential resource so the students can take active steps to advance their own learning. In reality, the feedback to students can be understood as instructional action.”.

Peer assessment gives students feedback on the quality of their work, often with ideas and strategies for improvement. At the same time, evaluating peers’ work can enhance the evaluators’ own learning and self-confidence. Peer involvement personalizes the learning experience, potentially motivating continued learning.

Student self-evaluations are an important component of formative assessment, and represent efforts of student in their own process learning. Self-evaluations encourage students to monitor their own learning and are an additional source of information on student learning.
