It is no secret that in our rapidly changing globalized world, every aspect of human life has changed, including the production, cooking and consumption of food. More and more people nowadays are constantly concerned with counting calories and being fit. Although this aspect may seem purely aesthetic, the food we consume has a direct influence on our health too. "We are what we eat" is a well-known saying, after all. In addition, increased population growth inevitably brings with it changes in eating habits. Scientists from different fields regularly predict possible food shortages in the near future. This is even more likely if the number of inhabitants in our planet keeps increasing.

They are constantly working on the posibiliity of including new products in our diet, especially trying to find new sources of proteins that may substitute the ones that we obtain from consuming meat from different animals. One of these additions could be algae. Of course, some people dislike the very thought of eating such food, Nevertheless, we shouldn´t forget that our beloved and delicious sushi is usually made with algae. Therefore, most people have already tasted this product. Now, what are some of the benefits of eating algae? It is not only highly nutritious, but it can be grown in both fresh and salt water. And what about insects as a new addition to your dinner table? Although many people remain skeptical, over 2,000 species of insects are already eaten worldwide. One of the benefits of consuming them is the high level of protein they contain. Besides, insects certainly require much less water, food and land than animals raised on grains.

Fast food restaurants are especially popular and convenient in this case. So the question is: Will fast food make it to the future? The answer is that it probably will, in spite of all the research and conclusive findings regarding the negative effects of unhealthy foods- such as hot dogs, hamburgers, and pizzas- on the human body.

This gave birth to a completely new field within the world of gastronomy that deals mainly with the concept of modifying the internal properties of the most commonly used cooking ingredients. Both chemists and daredevil chefs have worked together, for instance, to create recipes for hot ice cream, peanut butter powder, square eggs, and so on.

It´s undeniable that molecular gastronomy sounds very attractive, but will such meals be also healthy? The answer is yes, they absolutely can be, as long as healthy ingredients are used. Actually, most of the products used in these alternative cooking techniques are not artificial. Futhermore, food made using molecular gastronomy methods is often lower in cholesterol, dairy and sugar. One final piece of advice is to open your heart and mouth to new flavors and the discoveries of scientific research!
