Spanish Constitution

The King is the Head of the State but he doesn't make the laws or govern the country.

It was passed in 1978 and signed by Juan Carlos I.It is a set of basic principles that establish the rights and duties of Spanish citizens. It also fosters equality among Spanish people.

Spain is a democratic state:Citizens (over 18 years old) vote in elections to decide who represents us in the Parliament.

It interprets the laws.It decides if a person is obeying or breaking the rules.

It proposes and passes the laws.

It enforces the laws.It makes decisitions and organizes the State.

It is made up of:

  • Congress: it has 350 members.
  • Senate: it has 265 senators.
All of them are chosen in elections by Spanish citizens.

It is made up of:

  • President: chosen in the congress.
  • Vicepresidents and ministers: chosen by the president

It is made up of magistrates and judges who work in courts and tribunals.

Autonomous Communities

The Spanish territories are divided into 17 Autonomous Communities and 2 Autonomous Cities.Each of them has:

  • Its own government and parliament, chosen in elections.
  • Its own Statute of Autonomy: it establishes the basic principles about the community's organization and functioning.
