COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES

SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVE

Use comparative adjectives + than to compare two people or two things.

Use the + superlative adjective to say which is the biggest in a group

One syllable adjectives

ONE SYLLABLE ADJECTIVES

ADJECTIVE: Old Small

COMPARATIVE: Adjective + ER (than) Example: Older Smaller

SUPERLATIVE: The Adjective + EST Example: The oldest The smallest

The cat is older than the dog The mouse is smaller than the cat. We use the object pronoun (me, you, him, her, us , them) after than.

My brother is the oldest boy in the class It is the smallest village in Spain

One syllable ending in-E

ONE SYLLABLE ENDING IN-E

ADJECTIVE: Safe Large

COMPARATIVE: Adjective + R (than) Example: Safer Larger

SUPERLATIVE: The Adjective + ST Example: The safest The largest

One syllable ending in consonant, vowel, consonant

ONE SYLLABLE ENDING IN CONSONANT, VOWEL,CONSONANT

COMPARATIVE: Double the last consonant + ER (Than) Example: Bigger Hotter

SUPERLATIVE: Double the last consonant + EST Example: The biggest The hottest

TWO SYLLABLES ENDING IN Y

ADJECTIVE: Happy Silly

COMPARATIVE: Change Y to I + ER Example: Happier (than) Sillier (than)
