MACHINES

MACHINES

We use machines everyday. A machine is something we use to make work easier, that is, with less effort.

We can classify machines as simple machines or complex machines

Simple machines

They have few or no moving parts

Complex machines

Two or more simple machines working together

Simple MachinesInclined Plane

It’s a flat surface with one end higher than the other. We use inclined planes to move objects up and down different levels.

EXAMPLES OF INCLINED PLANES:

A slide

A ramp

Simple MachinesThe pulley

It’s a rope wrapped around a wheel. We use pulleys for lifting and lowering heavy objects.

EXAMPLES OF PULLEYS:

A flagpole

A well

Simple Machines

What simple machines did the Egyptians used to build the pyramids?

Simple MachinesThe wedge

A wedge consists of two inclined planes placed back to back. We use a wedge for cutting objects or for separating things

EXAMPLES OF WEDGE

A knife and an axe

Simple MachinesA wheel and an axle

A wheel attached to a bar (axle) so that they rotate togheter. We use a wheel and an axle for moving objects from one place to another.

A wheel barrow and roller skates

Simple MachinesA screw

It’s an inclined plane that goes around a cilinder. We use a screw for holding things together.

A jar and its lid

A drill

Simple MachinesA lever

It’s a straight bar over a fulcrum. We use a lever for lifting objects

TYPES OF LEVER

A door knob and a see saw

Simple MachinesA lever

Depending were the load, the fulcrum and the effort are we have three types of levers

What simple machines do you identify?

COMPLEX MACHINES

As we know, if we put simple machines working together, we get a complex machine.
