The Holocaust

The Holocaust was the systematic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of six million Jews by the Nazi regime and its allies and collaborators. The Nazis came to power in Germany in January 1933. They believed that the Germans belonged to a race that was "superior" to all others. They claimed that the Jews belonged to a race that was "inferior" and a threat to the so-called German racial community.

After the Japanese act on Pearl Harbor, a national security fear swept through the nation - especially on the West Coast. In February 1942, after a significant amount of pressure, FDR signed Executive Order 9066 that would result in the internment of Japanese Americans. From March to August of 1942, 112,ooo persons were sent to 'assemble centers,' nearly 70,000 of these were American citizens. These persons were relocated from the West Coast to site as far away as Rohwer, Arkansas.
