RENAISSANCE
1300 - 1600
- Focus on art and beauty in interior design.
- Grand paintings & furniture
- A lot of colour
- Expensive materials e.g. velvet, luxurious wood finishes
- Symmetry in the small details i.e. arches, panellings and wall mouldings
VICTORIAN
1837 - 1901
- Ornaments were the focal points of the room. Collectors ornaments were popular during this era.
- Depending on the room type, wall colours followed a strict rule: Only colours directly opposite or nect to eachother in the colour wheel.
- Mass production and affordable products allowed homeowners to fill their rooms with a myriad of furnishings, patterns and textures.
ART DECO
1920 - 1960
- The excitement of hollywood silbverscreen was reflected into design in this period.
- Glamorous rooms
- Angular and geometric shapes found in furniture, wallpaper patterns and decor.
- Clean lines and bold colours
- Stylish zig zag patterns.
NINETIES
1990 - 2000
- Era of minimalism
- beige and white dominatedthis period.
- Patterns slowly became p[opular e.g. damask and floral.
- Pine wood and wicker furnature were seen in most houses.
CONTEMPORARY
2000 - PRESENT
- Neutral colours
- Furniture in basic materials e.g. Stainlesss steel and wood.
- Minimal ornaments for an uncluttered and clean feel.
- Brighter colours are sometimes used to contrast against too much neutral.
- Comfortable and welcoming
- Simplicity, sophistication, subtlety
- Interiors showcase space rather than things.
