THE KATZ SYNDICATIONVIEWER STUDY
Katz Television Group annually surveys local TV viewers to get initial impressions of potential new First-Run syndication shows and their respective hosts.
Multiple factors contribute to the success of any program, including but not limited to, the actual execution of the concept, talent relatability, producers, the set, promotion, time periods and competition. At this point in time, the Katz study is purely measuring the strength of the concept and perception of the attached talent.

Of course, viewers are also partial to the shows they already watch and make time to view regularly. When we segment the survey responses among regular viewers of specific daytime shows today, there are definitely changes in intent to view. Drew Barrymore still, almost consistently, lands on top but the middle of the pack shifts. Hit the "PLAY" button on the graph to the left to see how intention to view shifts based on daytime programming OUR MEDIA panelists are already watching today.

What's Ahead for 2020?
In keeping with last Fall, there are a comparable number of new offerings for 2020 spread across different genres. There are a few big names, some re-born concepts and a smattering of off-net and off-cable fare. We hope the daytime audience is drawn to these new programs as they are a part of the continued survival of first-run syndication.

Share of GRPs
Monday-Friday sitcoms and their weekly half-hour counterparts remain the most vital players in the syndication arena. Though still delivering the highest GRP’s of the various genres, the sitcom percentage continues to decline. Among A25-54, the category dropped -3% from Fall 2017 and -2% with W25-54. A similar pattern holds true with the weekly hours. Talk, court and games have shown slight GRP increases over the last three years while magazines, reality and true crime remain relatively consistent.
Genre Trends
Highlights Grid
Genre Trends
Along the same lines as the GRP Profile, we see a comparable trend with the sitcom decline. Between Fall 2000 and Fall 2014 most years there was anywhere from three, four or five new off-net sitcoms, granted a few were off-cable, even up to eight in 2000. After the five entries in 2014, with the exception of 2017 where there were three, only one per year has been available for local stations. As we've seen, there has been an apparent lack of potential new successful “blue chip” network sitcoms and hour dramas in the syndicated pipeline for several years. So the tried and true continue to air in syndication, on cable and various other streaming venues. Talk and game remain relatively stable with a little fluctuation from year-to-year. Court exhibits an upward trend, especially with the addition of three new shows added to the genre ths fall. The magazine category's percentage of the pie has experienced a decline with no additons since Fall 2017.
Highlights Grid
The Freshman Class
The Class of 2019-20 are currently targeted to step up to a sophomore season, but that could change for some between now and next fall. KELLY CLARKSON is the top new program in the talk category (4th behind DR. PHIL, LIVE and ELLEN) as well as the valedictorian of all the new series, tied for 16th in HH’s and 17th in W25-54 out of 62 programs in total. JUDGE JERRY is next with its classmates and turns in a competitive overall performance, tying for 25th in HH’s with the ES COURT COMBO and STEVE WILKOS on the full ranking. TAMRON HALL and 25 WORDS OR LESS are nipping at JERRY’s heels, tied for 29th. If we veer off track and look at the local top 100 performance averages from the November ’19 survey, KELLY is still #1, but TAMRON moves up to 2nd and 25 WORDS is 3rd. JERRY, MEL ROBBINS and PERSONAL INJURY COURT all tie in HH rating, but while MEL rates slightly higher, JERRY places further down the rung.
Highlights Grid
Top Performers
Not much has changed with the overall syndication stats since the beginning of this season or even the last two. The story remains with the veteran programs leading the charge with few, if any, freshman shows able to break through. Nationally, JUDGE JUDY is the jurist to beat and FAMILY FEUD, WHEEL OF FORTUNE and JEOPARDY continue to be the most watched games, all turning in the greatest competitive performances across the board. Sitcoms such as BIG BANG, MODERN FAMILY, LAST MAN STANDING and FAMILY GUY achieve the loudest laughs. Stalwart magazines E.T and INSIDE EDITION land a top 10 position and DR. PHIL and LIVE WITH KELLY & RYAN lead the talk conversation. One of the things that these top performers have in common is stability, each holding on to key time slots over a long period. With the exception of JEOPARDY, which has remained status quo over the past season, and BIG BANG, which was down by -31% in HH rating, all of the top series have turned in minimal declines. Though not a top 10 performer, freshman talker KELLY CLARKSON was able to break into the HH top 20, tied for 16th.
Highlights Grid
Court Is In Session
JUDGE JUDY’s TV courtroom is an ostensibly impenetrable fortress, standing alone at the top of the court genre, delivering a 220% higher HH rating than its closest competitor HOT BENCH. Both of these court shows also rank among the top 10 of all nationally rated syndicated series. The next tier of higher rated jurists earned a 1.0 or higher HH rating -- RELATIONSHIP COURT, the perennial PEOPLE’S COURT, the ES COURT COMBO and new to wearing the robe JUDGE JERRY, which achieved a credible performance. The former two court vehicles placed in the top 20 on the overall ranking while the latter two finished in the top 25.
Highlights Grid
Have You Heard The News?
With all the “real” news to report these days -- both entertainment and hard line -- the magazine genre’s performance fluctuates. The two longest-running magazines, E.T. (since 1981) and INSIDE EDITION (since 1989), continue to be front and center in the category in HH’s and the key demos as well as top 10 performers among all syndicated fare. ACCESS HOLLYWOOD (yes, the Hollywood was put back in the title) with new host Mario Lopez, ranks next in line and is the only magazine (and only program overall) to exhibit any growth versusr same time frame year ago. It is also a top 10 entry among all programs. Though minimal, the magazine earned a +12% bump in HH’s and a +10% increase in W25-54 while status quo in A25-54. Mario took over for Billy Bush who now hosts EXRA. There haven't been any new offerings in this category since Fall 2017 and of the three, only DAILY MAIL TV is still on the air. Note that DAILY BLAST LIVE and THE LIST are not nationally rated.
Highlights Grid
What's So Funny?
THE BIG BANG THEORY has hogged the top spot in the sitcom genre for many years, just as it did on CBS in Primetime and just as JUDGE JUDY does in court. Even though it is still the #1 sitcom, the comedy has seen a drop in performance. Since the BIG BANG aired its final episode on the network in May, coincidence or not, the off-net sitcom has turned in the largest declines in HH’s (-31%), A25-54 (-43%) and W25-54 (41%) versus Fall 2018 (keeping in mind it has farther to fall). Its closest comedy competitor, LAST MAN STANDING is the only other sitcom to place among the top 10 of all syndicated fare. MODERN FAMILY finishes 3rd of all sitcoms and ties for 13th among all M-F programming. Twelve-year-olds TWO & A HALF MEN and FAMILY GUY, and two-year-old THE GOLDBERG’S round out the next tier of performers (above a 1.0 rating). Sophomore BLACKISH joins workhorses SEINFELD, MIKE & MOLLY and 2 BROKE GIRLS as well as MOM in its junior season. The invincible SIMPSONS wins the prize for the sitcom with the most longevity (it is not nationally rated).
Highlights Grid
Can We Talk?
On the talk show circuit, semi-controversial psychologist-in-residence, DR. PHIL, hands out top advice again this season while the dynamic duo, LIVE WITH KELLY & RYAN, and our go-to-for-fun gal, ELLEN, are the leading providers of celebrity talk and entertainment. While last fall, all three were the only talkers to register above a 2.0 national HH rating, DR. PHIL is the lone wolf today. LIVE and ELLEN lopped off three-tenths of a rating point from same time year ago with ELLEN falling out of the top 10 of all nationally rated strips. ELLEN has had a few guest-hosts this season, future contenders for her seat perhaps. The next tier of talkers garner above a 1.0 national HH rating including newcomer KELLY CLARKSON, which ranks 4th in its category. As a genre, all the talk shows remained relatively status quo versus year ago, flat-to-down one-to-four tenths of a rating point in HH’s and the key demos.
Highlights Grid
Let's Play A Game
Despite health challenges from hosts Alex Trebek and Pat Sajak, JEOPARDY out-played FAMILY FEUD for the #1 spot and WHEEL OF FORTUNE tied FEUD for #2 season-to-date. As mentioned earlier, JEOPARDY remains on an even keel since year ago while WHEEL is off two-tenths of a HH rating point with FEUD turning in a downward trajectory of four-tenths of a rating point. WHEEL and JEOPARDY are mostly access players in long-standing time periods with JEOPARDY also placed in some daytime and early fringe time slots. FAMILY FEUD runs all over station schedules. Of the newest entries to this small, but powerful game category, 25 WORDS OF LESS, achieving just under a 1.0 HH rating places among the top 40 of all 62 nationally rated syndicated programs.
Highlights Grid
Is It True-ly Reality?
This genre is a combined hodge-podge of off-network, off-cable true crime and reality programming that does not always deliver the highest ratings in syndication, but can be competitive. DATELINE entered the M-F syndication fray in the Fall of 2017 to positive results, continues to pull in over a 1.0 national rating as a strip and delivers an even better performance as a weekly (as you’ll see in the weekly analysis). Turning to the reality side of this combined category, LIVE PD: POLICE PATROL placed below DATELINE, but pulled ahead of the “original” in the genre, COPS. There were no new entries this season.
Highlights Grid
Weekend Fare
WEEKEND ADVENTURE remains the #1 weekly in national HH’s, A25-54 and W25-54 S-T-D and week-to-week. With that said, as reflected in the national rankings, the returning weekly series continue to rule the syndicated airwaves just as the M-F veteran programs do. Make note that a good amount of the top series as well as throughout the rest of the ranking are the 6th day of a strip. Along with the #1 series, MODERN FAMILY, DATELINE, FAMILY FEUD and BIG BANG show up in the top 5 across HH’s, A25-54 and W25-54. As it did in its strip performance, BIG BANG posted the largest declines, down -36% in HH’s, -45% in A25-54 and -44% in W5-54. If we break the weekend offerings down to the half-hours, FEUD is #2, MODERN FAMILY #3, BIG BANG #4 and WHEEL #5. Of the top 10 programs in HH’s (there are 13 titles), seven are first run and only three of those are not weekend versions of a strip program – WEEKEND ADV, AMERICAN ATHLETE COMBO and MATTER OF FACT. The latter two have registered slight growth over the same time frame year ago. AMERICAN ATHLETE achieved a +61% increase in HH’s, was up 50% in A25-54 and up+52% in W25-54. MATTER OF FACT demonstrated a +5% uptick in HH’s, was up +2% in A25-54 and grew W25-54 +10%.
