INTRODUCTION

Comparison is used to compare two people, things, or states, when you want to say that one thing has a larger or smaller amount of a quality than another.

Or when you are considering whether two people or things are equal.

Or when one thing has qualities that exceed all the others

We use comparative adjectives to show change or make comparisons. They are used to compare differences between the two objects they modify (larger, smaller, faster, higher). They are used in sentences where two nouns are compared, in this pattern:

N (subject) + V + comparative adj + than + N (object).

Superlative adjectives are used to describe an object which is at the upper or lower limit of a quality (the tallest, the smallest, the fastest, the highest). They are used in sentences where a subject is compared to a group of objects.

N (subject) + V + the + superlative adj + N (object).

How to form comparatives and superlatives.

By Alejandro Lara

Comparative and superlative forms

We usually add –er and –est to one-syllable words

If an adjective ends in a vowel and a consonant, we double the consonant

We use more and most for most two syllable adjectives and for all adjectives with three or more syllables.

If an adjective ends in –e, we add –r or –st

If an adjective ends in a consonant and –y, we change –y to –i and add –er or –est

Irregular adjectives

  • The adjectives good, bad and far have irregular comparatives and superlatives.
  • good better best
  • bad worse worst
  • far farther/further farthest/furthest
