What is language mediation?
Language mediation is the fifth competence defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
It can be categorised as cross-language or interlinguistic mediation, which involves an exchange of information between two languages, or intralinguistic mediation, which involves transferring information within the same language.

Tasks for B2 students
In the certificate exam students are required to do two cross-language spoken mediation tasks.
They will be provided with a text of up to 250 words, a graph chart, infographics…. In about 10-15 minutes they will have to do two tasks: 1. In 4 minutes they will have to select the information relevant to the task, structure and adapt it to give it to the receiver in up to 2 minutes.
2. They might have to explain some idioms or cultural references from the text.

Tasks for B2 students
Students that follow the continuous assessment process are required to do one cross-language spoken mediation task and one written mediation task.
SPOKEN MEDIATION They will be provided with a text of up to 250 words, a graph chart, infographics…. In 4 minutes they will have to select the information relevant to the task, structure and adapt it to give it to the receiver in up to 2 minutes.
WRITTEN MEDIATION They will be provided with a text of up to 250 words, a graph chart, infographics... In 30 minutes they will have to select, structure and adapt the information relevant to the task and write it down in between 80-100 words.

Some tips that might be helpful to carry out the tasks:

• decide whether there is some cultural information, not explicit in the text, that should be given.
• select the information, ONLY the one that is necessary for the task, discard any irrelevant information.

• use a level of language in accordance with the B2, but remember it IS NOT a requirement to provide an exact translation of a text.

Students will be assessed on their linguistic and cognitive abilities
• linguistic ability : morphosyntactic and lexical mistakes and punctuation.
• fulfilment of the task: appropriate choice and organisation of information, adequate register and length.
• intercultural performance: ability to explain culturally specific lexis and cultural differences.
• interaction ability: non-verbal communication and fluency.
