Have you ever played this game?

before the game , practise

He/she could have been 60 may have been 60 might have been 60 can't have been 60 must have been 60

He/she could be 60 may be 60 might be 60 can't be 60 must be 60

instructions

The class is divided into teams. The aim of the game is to find out the exact age of some famous people while using the target language. In this case, modal verbs.

Teams will be offered a clue to help you guess the exact age

There are 3 types of clues:

  • the SONG ( one song released on the year of birth of the famous person)
  • the EVENT (an important event of the year the celebrity was born),
  • the CELEBRITY ( another famous person born in the same year)

MATERIALS: YOU WILL NEED BLANK SLIPS OF PAPER

instructions

All the teams play at the same time

1. Teams will be shown a picture of a famous person.

2. Teams will confer for 30 seconds and the spokesperson for each team will orally give an estimate of the age of the person using the target language. For ex. He might be 60. I would encurage using modal verbs of possibility for this first round.

3. After that, they can choose a clue to help them guess the right age. Only one clue per celebrity is displayed. Get teams to agree on the first clue.

instructions

4. The clue is displayed/shown and again teams will have 30 seconds to agree on the age of the person in the picture but this time they will need to write a sentence using a modal verb and indicating their guess. When the time is up, all teams at the same time will have to raise a slip of paper with the age they think the person has. For ex: He must be 42. I would encourage the use of "must" after students see the clue, to show they are more sure.

5. Choose a couple of teams to justify their answer, again using the target language.

6. Display the answer. The winner of this round will be the team closest to the actual age without going over and they will get to choose the clue for the next celebrity-

7. In this game, there will be some pictures of dead famous people to practise the perfect modals.
