New Moodle Theme Tour

A Modern Moodle for FPU

We're excited to present this new Moodle experience to the FPU community. The changes bring the look-and-feel of Moodle more up-to-date and provide a modern teaching and learning experience to our digital learning platform. This project has been a collaborative effort between the Center for Online Learning and I.T. Services, in consultation with University Communications and Marketing, the Online Advisory Committee and input from a select group of faculty and students.

Not just another Moodle update

This Moodle update is actually 2-in-1. This update combines a new theme (look-and-feel) and a new version (functionality & security). Our last theme update was in July 2015. Our last version update was in April 2018.

Course Updates - Collapsible Topics

Index

Courses can now be collapsed, by module, to reduce the need to scroll up and down the course. There is also a button in the lower right corner to quickly navigate back to the top of the course.

Course Updates - Editing Toggle

Index

The button to "Turn Editing On" is now placed in the top navigation bar and is persistent in the display, meaning you will not have to scroll up to turn editing on. Also, the Edit toggle utilizes a "scrollspy" feature that will return your view to the location on the page you were viewing when you toggled editing when the page reloads.

Course Updates - Block Region

Index

Blocks are now placed in a collapsible region that can be accessed by a toggle at the top of the course, just below the User Menu. This new feature allows for blocks to be placed in 3 columns and allows for the main course page to focus on course content.

Course Updates - Course Dashboard

Index

The course dashboard for the instructor gives quick access to a number of functions that were previously in menus and sub-menus, such as access to the Participants, Groups, Gradebook, Activity Reports, Question Bank, and more. For students, the Course Dashboard shows the course instructor, course description, and quick access to your grades and progress.

The new activity icons were chosen to be more clean and provide less visual distraction, while still providing a visual representation of the relevant activity.

Simplified, line icons are popular today due to accessibility and because reducing the attention to icons allows the content to be the focus.

Today, more and more users are accessing Moodle from a variety of devices, and we wanted to make sure our new theme provided a high-quality, consistent experience however you access the site.

When you access a course for the first time there will be a guided tour through some of the elements as well.
