It is a Christian temple located in the city of León, in Spain. It is one of the most outstanding Romanesque architectural ensembles in Spain, for its history, architecture, sculpture, and for the Romanesque luxury objects that have been preserved. It has the particularity of having a Royal Pantheon located at the foot of the church, with Romanesque mural painting and original capitals, all of which makes it a unique piece of the Romanesque world of the time. The whole was built and enlarged during the 11th and 12th centuries.

BUILDING

On the old church of San Juan Bautista de León, the Royal Pantheon dedicated to San Isidoro was raised; the Queen Doña Sancha, wife of Fernando I, enlarges it in the first years of the s. XI, building on the side of the feet a portico of three naves covered with arched vaults, columns or cruciform pillars with semi-attached columns whose historiated capitals reveal the presence of the new Romanesque style. This church, consecrated in 1063, was dedicated to San Isidoro, whose relics were brought from Seville. As the previous temple was small, Doña Urraca, daughter of Doña Sancha, had the present church of San Isidoro built in the last third of the 11th century, a work that is already fully Romanesque and, in addition to a well-known author, the master Pedro Deustamben, who He was buried in the temple with great honors in recognition of his work.

ARQUITECTURE

Let's start with vaults was painted in the twelfth century a repertoire of the first order in European Romanesque `for what is called the" Sistine Chapel "of the Romanesque. the square, is on the southern side of the two monumental doors. The one of the Forgiveness is opened in the wall of the gable end of the transept and is decorated with a tympanum beautifully sculpted with the scenes of the Descent, the empty Sepulcher and the Ascension. The mochetas that support it are magnificent with two expressive heads of animals. Above it appear the hieratic and solemn figures of San Pedro and San Pablo and above an arcade on the tejaroz. Inside, we see a basilica with three naves full of exquisite sculpture. The interior breathes a medieval atmosphere. The penumbra, the solidity of the pillars, the imagination of the carvings transport the visitor to a forgotten world.

Painting

The Royal Collegiate Church of San Isidoro is undoubtedly one of the most emblematic buildings of Spanish Romanesque art. The paintings of his pantheon are considered the Sistine Chapel of the Romanesque. The paintings show us three different cycles of the liturgy, all of them presented in different scenes: Christmas, the Passion and the Resurrection. On the other hand, in the intrados of one of the arches was represented what is probably the most interesting agricultural calendar of Romanesque painting, although recent research suggests the idea that it could be rather a generic reference to the passage of time, full of metaphors aimed at the nobility and the monarchy itself. The general characteristics of Romanesque painting, such as the absence of perspective, the crushing of figures or an evident tendency to simplify and geometrize volumes. Of course, we do not know who or who could be its authors. For a long time these paintings were attributed to artists from France, so their works would show some differences with their contemporaries in the Catalan area. However, it also points out the possibility that these frescoes could have been made by artists from a local workshop, Leon, given some similarities with the miniature of the same period made in the kingdom of León.
