How to
write a short story
step-by-step
First, we need to do the PRE-WRITE. This is where we put all our ideas for our story. This part can be words and phrases. We don´t need to put full sentences yet. We only need ideas. We need to answer:
- Who is the story about? A vampire named Olaf VonBatty, good at flying, 349 years old
- What happened? His birthday, wants to fly to town, flies to town, buys a cake, problem: drops the cake, solution: friends get him a cake
- When did it happen? Yesterday
- What was the weather? Stormy, cold and windy
Now we need to take our ideas and make sentences. We also need to make sure we take all our verbs (underlined above) and change them to the simple past tense.
1) We can start the story with WHEN it happened:Yesterday, it was Olaf VonBatty´s birthday. 2) Now, we can describe WHO the story is about: Olaf was a vampire and he turned 349 years old! 3) Now, we can describe the weather: It was a stormy and cold day, but that was Olaf´s favorite weather! 4) Let´s describe what happened (you can add details)! Olaf was a very good flier. He flew (to fly) into town to his favorite cake shop. He bought (to buy) a special cake. It was red with black bats! 5) Now write the problem: On his way home, it was very windy. Olaf dropped the cake! 6) Now finish the story with a solution to the problem: Olaf was very sad. He went to his kitchen and... SURPRISE! All his friends were there! And he saw a big red cake with black bats! His friends had got the special cake for him! Olaf was happy.
