When was the monument built?

This building was started in 1184 by the Muslims, the works were paralyzed with the earthquake of 1365. In 1568 the works by Christians were resumed and in 1568 they ended with the raising of the bells.

The architect was ordered to be built by the military Abu Yaqub Yusuf to be the minaret of a mosque. The builder was Ali of Gomara. In the 16th century there was a change of architect and builder due to the reconquest. Hernán Ruiz was in charge of finishing the construction of the Giralda.

Phases of costruction

La Giralda is constituted by two different bodies the Muslim part is the oldest, it was started in 1184 to be the minaret of the Almohad Mosque of Seville. Its construction began in stone, as can be seen at its base, using the remains of some Roman buildings and constructions. The death of Abu Yacub Yusuf brought a change in the work, when she was commissioned by Ali de Gomara, who continued the construction in brick, based on the minaret of the Kutubia Mosque of Marrakech, considered a masterpiece of Hispanic-Maghreb art. Due to the earthquake of 1365 the original yamur, set of four golden spheres that crowned the tower, was lost. At that time it was replaced by a simple belfry. In the 16th century, the current Christian body, the bell tower, was added. The work is in 1568 with the raising of the bells to the tower.

The Giraldillo -The image of the Giraldillo weighs about 1,500 kilos -are two pieces that can be dismantled -these pieces are made of bronze -made in 1568 by the artillery Bartolomé Morel, - was sculpted by Juan Bautista Vázquez El Viejo, -the Giralda is made in three dimensions - the mould was designed by the painter Luis de Vargas. - It was placed on the tower in 1568, and it was lowered in 1999 for its restoration, which was carried out between 1999 and 2003.

The bells

• -La Giralda has a total of 24 bells, of which 18 bells turn and 6 are knocked,
• -Each of them receive a different name than each of these names is engraved on the bells.

Curiosities

1. The original name of this monument when it was built was Triumph of the Faith victorious, although shortly after it began to be called Giralda because it turned. 2. when it was built it became the highest tower in Spain and Europe. 3. in the Giralda there are no stairs but 35 ramps. 4. The Giralda is considered a "multipurpose" building, since throughout history it has served as: element of religious call, barn, housing, clock, watchtower, luminaire and lightning rod. 5.. Around the four sides of the tower, there is engraved an inscription in Latin "Turris fortissima Nomen DNI Proverb.18" which means "The strongest tower is the Name of the Lord". 6. there are several replicas of this iconic building around the world as for example in New York or Kansas City. 7. The end of this monument was to commemorate the Almohad victory in the Battle of Alarcos.
