The cathedral of lion was the third great seo of the classic gothic in the crown of Castile. It was started in the second half of the 13th century. This cathedral was the replacement of a Roman-style temple.

INTRODUCTION

BUILDING

In 1275 construction began during the bishopric of Martin Fernandez although this project was born in the previous bishopric. At the beginning of its construction it was directed by the master Simon and then the teacher Enrique worked, who died in 1277. Afterwards he was directed by a new master burgales, Perez and worked until the end of the 13th century. In 1301 the main building was finished. At the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th the caustro was built. And then the towers in the 16th century. In the 17th century a baroque dome was built century after the pinnacles were added. In the 19th century, Juan Madrazo eliminated the baroque dome and made a project to reconstruct it in the Gothic, and finally it was carried out by Demetrio de los Rios. In 1901 the new catredral was opened.

ARCHITECTURE

It has a clear French influence on the elevation of the floor and facade. It is composed of three naves and a large transept with three other naves, making the side facades and the foot facades equally important. 9 chapels open in the ambulatory. It is also covered with simple vaults with a large central button. It has three levels of windows that are the ones that open the cathedral, the clerestory and those that open between the clerestory and the deck. The stained glass windows of the 13th and 14th century are the most important of the Spanish gothic. The cloister is in the form of a square with 6 arches on each side. In the main façade there are two towers that appear separated from the facade creating a very original ship and one is taller than the other. This cathedral has 3 western doors, three doors in the south arm, and a door in the south arm where you tell the stories of Jesus, the virgin Mary and the evangelists.

PAINTING

This cathedral stands out for what is known as the dematerialization of Gothic art which means that the walls were reduced to the minimum being replaced by large stained glass windows, which are the main element that differentiate them as they are one of the most outstanding collections of medieval stained glass windows in all over the world, giving the place an impressive and beautiful natural light.
