Demography is the science that studies the changes in birth and death rates, immigration and emigration statistics.

What is absolute population?

Absolute Population is the number of inhabitants in an area. The absolute population is constantly changing due to birth and death rates, immigration and emigration statistics.

What is population density?

Population Density is shows us how populated an area is.

We calculate population density by dividing the number of inhabitants by the size of the area they live in. The measurement for area is square kilometres (km2).

What is life expectancy?

Life expectancy is the average number of years that people live.

In 1900 life expectancy in Spain was around 35 years old. Nowadays, life expectancy in Spain is 83 years old. In 2040, life expectancy in Spain will be around 85.8 years old.

  • Spanish Population is mostly urban. Most people live in large cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla or Valencia and coastal regions.
  • Many people come to Spain than leave it.
  • Although the birth rate hasn't increased, the death rate has experienced a decrease.
  • Spain has more elderly people than ever before.

  • In the first half of the 20th century many Spaniards emigrated to North and South America.
  • In the 1960s and 1970s people emigrated Germany, The United Kingdom or France.
  • At the end of the 20th century Spain started to receive immingrants from other countries such as Romania, Morocco, Ecuador, Colombia and the United Kingdom.

  • Most people from rural areas moved to cities to find work. This process is called RURAL EXODUS.
