What is a machine?

ATRÁS

A machine is something made up of one or several parts to perform a specific task or function.

These parts are called components. When a machine has got few components it´s a simple machine, but when it has got many components, it´s a compound machine.

MACHINES AND ENERGY

Machines can be different depending on the energy they use:

  • Machines that use mechanical energy (muscles): scissors, bicycles, trolleys, skates...
  • Machines that use electrical energy (batteries, plugs): television, computer, mp3...
  • Machines that use chemical energy (fuel): cars, healing center, planes...

Use your dictionary to look for 10 machines.

What is a simple machine?

Machines that have just one or few components. They use mechanical energy (mucles) to produce force or movement.

ATRÁS

types of simple machines

  • INCLINED PLANE: it´s a ramp between two areas of different heights (alturas).
  • LEVER: it´s a rigid bar that moves around a fixed suppor point (punto de apoyo).
  • ROLLER: it´s a block in the shape of a cylinder or tube.
  • WHEEL: it´s a rotating cylinder with an axis (eje). It´s reduce the friction to move objects.
  • PULLEY: it´s a sort of wheel with a cable to lift objects.

What is a COMPOUND machine?

Machines that have many components. To combine several (varios) components, they need transmissions. There are different types of transmissions:

ATRÁS

  • AXLES:: are rigid bars (barras) that connect two rotatory components.
  • GEARS:: are pairs of wheels, with different sizes (tamaños) and "teeth".
  • BELTS and CHAINS: they transmit the force produced by turning one wheel (rueda) to another wheel.

COMPOUND machineS

Most of machines in our houses are compound machines. Many of them work with electrical engines or combustion engines:

  • Electrical engines (motores eléctricos): they use cables, magnets (imanes) and electricity. Examples: drill, fridge, vacuum cleaner...
  • Combustion engine: they use the explosion of fuel. Examples: cars, motorbikes, lorries, planes, saws...
