info
- We have learnt that voluntary non-remunerated blood donation is vital for a safe and sustainable blood supply.
- While our goal is to reach 100% VNRBD globally, for those countries that still rely of family replacement donors, there should be a plan to phase these out.
- This plan should include strategies for converting safe family replacement donorsinto regular, voluntary blood donors.

- Family Donors have faced this fear and learned it wasn’t the unpleasant experience they may have expected.
- They’ve also experienced first-hand the need for blood to save a loved one.

Create a positive experience.Address the donor’s barriers (What are you afraid of?).Ensure they understand that their blood will not be sold. Educate the donor that today they are donating blood for their family, in future they can donate for someone else.Inform them when they are next eligible to donate.Notify them of the urgency of blood needs and stockAsk if the donor understands, and if they have any questions.Ask the donor if they minded being contacted in the future about events and blood donation (consider a database of safe FRDs or a recording mechanism).Thank the donor.
