Eddie Carbone

Eddie Carbone, from A View from the Bridge is a longshoremen workin in New York. He has a wife, Beatrice and a niece called Catherine. Eddie is a traditional man, in the sense that he works and has a family. He is really attached with justice. During the play it can be noticed that he is very possesive and behaves in a defensive way, the fact that two men (Marco and Rodolpho) entered in his life made him feel invaded. In addition, Eddie is very strict and protective with Catherine because of the strong feelings he has for her, the same feelings that made him dig his own grave. Personally, we dont feel sympathy for him at all, he deserves what he finally got because of making such a difficult life to Catherine. Eddie should had accepted Catherine's grow up, he even broke the code he promised to never brake.

This quotation suggests how invaded did Eddie felt by Rodolpho. the reader can also understand that Eddie had Catherine as a possesion when she wasnt, as it had always be that way, when Catherine grows up and starts to make desitions, its very hurtful for Eddie.

‘he’s stealing from me!’ P35

IN this phrase, Eddie expreses his feelings, we get to know that he is devastated. Curiously, it seems as if he was bracking up with Catherine, but that is just what Eddie believes.

‘it’s breakin’ my heart, y’know’ P35

Here is when we get to know the importance Eddie gave to Catherine. For him, she was even of mayor priority than Beatrice, his wife.

‘I took out of my wife’s mouth’ P35
