This enables the licence to be discoverable by websites and is embedded in the code of a page on a site.

These are the terms and conditions as determined by the legal system and are written in legalese.

These are the licence requirements written for regular people or users of the licence.

There are 4 elements and icons that make up Creative Commons licences.

Attribution

This element indicates that the work cannot be used for commercial purposes by other users.

This element indicates that any works that use the original must be licensed under the same licence as the original.

This element indicates that other users cannot change the work; it can only be used in its original state.

This element indicates that if the work is to be used by others, the author must be attributed. All Creative Commons licences contain this element.

There are 6 types of Creative Commons licences

CC BY

Icons: CC + Attribution

Allows others to use the original work for any purpose (even for commercial profit or with changes) provided the original is attributed.

CC BY-SA

Icons: CC + Attribution + ShareAlike

Allows others to use the original work for any purpose (even for commercial profit or with changes) provided the original is attributed and license the new work in the same way as the original.

CC BY-NC

Icons: CC + Attribution + NonCommercial

Allows others to use the original work for non-commercial purposes provided the original is attributed.

CC BY-NC-SA

Icons: CC + Attribution + NonCommercial + ShareAlike

Allows others to use the original work for non-commericial purposes provided the original is attributed and the new work is shared under the same licence.

CC BY-ND

Icons: CC + Attribution + NoDerivatives

Allows others to use the original work with no changes for any purpose (even for commercial profit) provided the original is attributed.

CC BY-NC-ND

Icons: CC + Attribution + NonCommercial + NoDerivatives

Allows others to use the original work without any changes for non-commerical purposes provided the original is attributed.

What if someone doesn't want to claim copyright?

Individuals who don't want their work to fall under copyright can license their work as , which waives their rights to the work.
