Referencing Checklist

Note FULL details of source used AT the time you use it

Build your reference list as you research & write

Check which referencing system you need for your subject

Cite sources WITHIN the text as you write

“Be aware when using free referencing tools (e.g. Mendeley, Cite This For Me etc.) that these are unsupported and there will be differences in their formatting, particularly when using Harvard which may be significantly different to the UoN Harvard. Always check your references against the UoN guides for your subject as appropriate, before you submit your work. You can find the guides here. NELSON can also help you with citations . When you’ve found a resource on NELSON, click on the quotation mark symbol. You will then need to choose the correct Referencing system from the list on the left hand side. You will still need to check and amend the citation, to ensure it is consistent with UoN referencing standards.

Caption images/tables/diagrams and cite the source

Be consistent! Make sure you apply the same format consistently throughout.

Proofread your citations and check against your work

Check you have cited EVERY source you have used
