CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

The main characteristic of conditional sentences is that the condition is introduced by: IF = si Eg. If you study hard, you will pass all exams UNLESS = a menos que Unless you study hard , you won´t pass all exams * WHETHER is similar to IF , but it is not frequently used.

There are 4 types of conditional sentences Type 0 If you boil water, it evaporates Type 1 If you study hard, you will pass all exams Type 2 If you studied hard, you would pass all exams Type 3 If you had studied hard, you would have passed all exams

CONDITIONAL TYPE 0 ( CERTAINTY) IF + PRESENT SIMPLE / PRESENT SIMPLE If you heat ice , it melts Si calientas hielo, se derrite You can also say: Ice melts if you heat it

CONDITIONAL TYPE 1 ( REAL POSSIBILITY) IF + PRESENT SIMPLE / WILL+INFINITIVE If it doesn´t rain, I will go to the beach ( Si no llueve, iré a la playa) You can also say: I will go to the beach if it doesn´t rain

CONDITIONAL TYPE 2 ( UNREAL) IF + PAST SIMPLE / WOULD + INFINITIVE If I *were rich, I would live in Miami ( Si fuese rico, viviría en Miami) You can also say: I would live in Miami, if I were rich * In this type of conditional, it´s common use "were" for all persons.

CONDITIONAL TYPE 3 ( NO POSSIBLE) IF + PAST PERFECT ( HAD + P.P) / WOULD HAVE + P.P If I had known it, I would have bought a birthday present ( Si lo hubiese sabido, habría comprado un regalo de cumpleaños) You can also say: I would have bought a birthday present if I had known it
