What is hydrosphere?

Water is one of the most common substances on the Earth. Covering over 70% of the surface of the Earth, it is easy to find. Even in a desert it is not hard to find water, if you know where to look.

Our Little blue world is divided into four separate spheres. These spheres are the lithosphere, the atmosphere, the biosphere, and the hydrosphere.

Bodies of water

We can find different bodies of water into the earth: oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, glaciers or groundwater. These water formations can be divided into Continental or oceanic water.

Oceanic water

The mass of salt water that covers most of the earth's crust is usually divided into large areas that we call oceans and other minor areas that we call seas.

There is one world ocean, but it is divided into five main areas: the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Indian, the Arctic, and the Southern, or Antarctic. Together, they can be seen as one world ocean because they have no real borders, and water flows freely between them.

Continental water

The continental waters are those in the land not covered by oceans. It is almost always freshwater in solid (ice) or liquid state. Types of continental bodies of water:

Glacier: A huge mass of ice slowly flowing over a landmass, formed from compacted snow in an area where snow accumulation

Rivers are large streams that flow over the land. They are hence large flowing water bodies, they usually end up in an ocean or sea.

Groundwater is the water found underground in the cracks and spaces in soil, sand and rock.

Lake is a water body surrounded by land on all sides.
