Becoming a Ballad Composer

Take the challenge and enrol in the school's poetry contest

Mission Student Challenge

Write a ballad for the school's poetry competition

Situation

The School has launched a poetry competition not only for its students but also for any potential poet of the local, national and international community. All the winners will see their work published in an e-book and included in the school's website.

Mission Description

To accomplish this mission successfully students will form a "music group" of 3 to 4 students, write a ballad and record themselves while performing it accompanied by copyright-free music.

Mission Steps

Record yourself singing the ballad and post the video (mp4 file or Youtube/Vimeo link) on the Poetry Contest Edmodo group

Compose a ballad following the features studied in class and the contest's rules.

Find a tune which could go with it on Jamend0 or other copyright-free music sites. If you are good with music, compose your own tune.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Understand the features of the ballad as a poetic genre.

Apply the features of this poetic genre (storytelling, rhyme and rhythm, figures of speech, sound devices, etc.) to a personal creation.

Collaborate in small groups, interacting, discussing options and negotiating.

Create a digital artefact (video) using a set of digital tools and apps.

Purpose

Students will be able to reflect on the ballad as a form of expressing themselves, telling their peers stories which maybe would not be told in their everyday interactions. This activity will allow them to learn from their peers, get to know them and understand them better and learn new ways to be inclusive.
