The Nuffield Early Language Intervention is for children in their first year of primary school who show weakness in their oral language skills and who are therefore at risk of experiencing difficulty with reading. Developed by a team of academic experts, it is underpinned by evidence* demonstrating a positive impact on children’s attainment.

* Randomised control trial conducted by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) in 2016, involving 34 schools and nurseries.

The Nuffield Early Language Intervention can be used by schools following any curriculum. Support is provided within the teaching handbooks to correlate with the Early Years Foundation Stage.

A two-day professional development course, run by specialist training consultancy Elklan, provides teaching assistants and teachers with all of the information and skills they need. The professional development covers the pedagogical background as well as practical training on how to run the sessions.

The two resource kits provide teaching handbooks with detailed lesson plans, plus a set of picture cards and photocopiables for use in the sessions. A Ted puppet is provided to support the sessions too.
