Tom Sawyer: Tom is the protagonist of the book. He is a naughty boy with a great imagination, he is intelligent. Tom and his friends often get into trouble. He lives with her aunt. He often lies and doesn’t go to school or he escapes from his house at night. He says that he wants to be a pirate or a robber as Robin Hood. He is usually the leader in the adventures that he has with his friends.

Huck: He is independent from his parents, he has no authority. Most of the mothers don’t want their children to interact with him, but children admire him because he has no obligations. When they found the treasure he says he doesn’t want to live all his life with this money since it will be too easy, he prefers to go out and search for food and live outside.

Characters

Injun Joe: He is the main bad character. He murdered Dr. Robinson at the graveyard and he blamed Muff Potter. Finally, Tom told the truth about the murder and he ran away. He died of starvation and thirst when the cave was closed and he couldn’t go out of it.

Aunt Polly: She takes over the guardianship of Tom after the death of his mother, who was her sister. She tries to raise Tom as best as she can, although it is difficult because he often lies her and scape from her. She becomes very happy when Tom tells her that he loves her.

PLOT

Tom Sawyer is a boy who lives with his aunt whose name is Polly. Tom is a naughty boy. One of his first mischief takes place when his aunt wanted him to paint a fence and he got out of it by tricking the local boys, he told them that he would pay them for painting the fence. Finally, they painted the fence too soon and his aunt couldn’t believe it. Tom becomes friend of Huck, who is a guy that doesn’t have mother. One day, they decided to go to the graveyard with a dead cat since Hunk said that it would cure their warts. Surprisingly, they see Dr. Robinson, Injun Joe, and Muff Potter at the graveyard . They started to fight and Injun Joe murders Dr. Robinson and blames Muff Potter, who was drunk and lying on the ground. Tom and Huck decided not to say anyone what had happened. Muff Potter was sent to prison until Tom talked in public and told what happened, but Injun Joe ran away. One day, he went to a desert island with Huck and another friend named Joe. They tried to survive there for a few days. Their families thought that they had died and on Sunday they celebrated a funeral. When the families were crying, they appeared in the church and they were treated as heroes the next day at school.

PLOT

Tom went on a picnic with Becky, who he had fallen in love with. They went to a cave with a group of people, but they got lost in the cave. The other members tried to rescue them, nevertheless they couldn’t find them. After some days, Tom found an exit and they could return home. In this cave Tom saw Injun Joe, but he didn’t tell Becky. Tom and Huck came up with the idea of searching a treasure. In the first place, they went to a haunted house and they heard voices of Injun Joe and another man, they found money and said that they would save it in “number two”. Then, they try to search it on the number two bedroom of a tavern, but it wasn’t there. Tom tells Huck he had seen Injun Joe and he may have hidden the treasure there. Lastly, they went to the cave and found the treasure with over twelve thousand dollars.

MARK TWAIN

He was born on 30th November, 1835 in Florida. His name is Samuel Clemens, but he wrote under the pen name Mark Twain. He is the sixth child of John and Jane Clemens. He wrote books such as The adventures of Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn or books about the Mississippi River.He moved to Hannibal and lived there until the age of 17, this place inspires him to write about Tom Sayer and Huckleberry Finn. He was also licensed as a pilot and piloted a steamboat on the Mississippi. In 1870 he married Olivia Langdon and he improved his social status since she was the daughter of a rich New York coal merchant.

MARK TWAIN

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was published in 1876 and then, he began to write The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. It was finally published in 1884. Mark Twain died on 21st April, 1910 at the age of 74.
