WHAT IS THE QUATTROCENTO?
Quattrocento is an expression that means "four hundred", that refers to the XV century. Is the first period of the movement known as "Renaissance". It started in Italy, and the centre of this style was the city of Florence.

ARCHITECTURE IN THE QUATTROCENTO
The architects were inspired by Greco-Roman architectures. Is very common to see greco-roman elements in the architectures of this period. The use of this element contributes to the creation of a rational space. The most famous Florence artists were Filippo Brunelleschi and León Batista Alberti. In theirs architectures, they introduced estilistics innovations based on geometry.

SCULPTURE IN THE QUATTROCENTO
During this period, artists represented commonly, human body. To process dimensions and the naked bodies, they paid attention to classical models. The most important sculptors were Donatello (that show elegance and vitality in his artworks. Before Donatello, never any sculptor shows these) and Lorenzo Ghiberti.

PAINTING IN THE QUATTROCENTO
The most important innovation by painters in the Quattrocento was the perspective. The perspective lets represent the depth on a flat surface. The representation of the nature and the representation of character's feelings some of the main topics during the Quatrrocento. The most important painters of this period were Masaccio, Pierre della Francesca and Sandro Botticelli (he recreated a mythological world full of beauty and sensibility).

WHAT IS THE CINQUECENTO?
Cinquecento is an expression that means "five hundred", that refers to the XVI century. During this period the artistic centre moved to Rome because the Vatican is in Rome and the most of the artists moved to Rome to work there. In the Cinquecento the Popes commissioned a large number of projects.

Pope Julio II began the construction of the basilica of Saint Pedro, and he orders the artworks to Bramante and Miguel Ángel. In the north of Italy, the most important architect was Andrea Paladio, that built Villa Capra.

The most important architects were Miguel Ángel and Benvenuto Cellini. Miguel Ángel is known because his works show feelings. Benvenuto Cellini's works are mainly about mythological themes.

PAINTING IN THE CINQUECENTO
Leonardo da Vinci was a very important Renaissance painter. He was a master in the work of light. Rafael Sanzio was a master in the technique work. His Madonne are very famous. Miguel Ángel decorated the Sistine Chapel. This paintings reflect volumetric shapes. In the XVI century, in the Venecia School, Giorgione, Tintoretto and Tiziano became famous.
