Is a tradition within Christianity comprising the Church of England and churches which are historically tied to it or hold similar beliefs, worship practices and church structures.

// Origin

The word Anglican originates in ecclesia anglicana, a medieval Latin phrase dating to the Magna Carta (1215) and before, which means the "English Church". Adherents of Anglicanism are called "Anglicans". The great majority of Anglicans are members of churches which are part of the international Anglican Comunion

The first Anglican church in American was built at Jamestown, Virginia. There is a public perception, especially in the United States, that Henry VIII created the Anglican church in anger over the Pope's refusal to grant his divorce, but the historical record indicates that Henry spent most of his reign challenging the authority of Rome, and that the divorce issue was just one of a series of acts that collectively split the English church from the Roman church in much the same way that the Orthodox church had split off five hundred years before.

There are, however, a number of churches that are not within the Anglican Communion which also consider themselves to be Anglican, most notably those referred to as continuing anglican churches, and those which are part of the Anglican realignment movement. Anglicanism represents the third largest Christian communion in the world, after the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Churches. The number of Anglicans in the world is over 85 million as of 2011.

Henry asked Cardinal Wolsey to appeal to Pope Clement VII for an annulment and it soon became clear he wanted to marry Anne Boleyn. In 1533, Henry VIII broke with the church and married with Anne Boleyn in a secret ceremony. In September 1533 Anne gave birth to a daughter, Elizabeth ( Queen Elizabeth I) She was arrested in 1536 on trumped up charges of adultery and publicly beheaded at the Tower of London.

He obtained the papal dispensation required to allow him to marry his brother's widow, Catherine of Aragon.

Thomas Cromwell arranged a marriage between the king and German princess Anne of Cleves. The marriage was a disaster and Henry divorced Anne a few months later.
