Romeo and Juliet:A Didactic Sequence with Integrated Technolgies
01 Introduction: A WebQuest on Shakespeare
Research on Shakespeare's Life and Times
- In pairs, the students will complete a WebQuest about Shakespeare's life, the Elizabethan era and its theatre, so as to be introduced into the historical context of Romeo and Juliet - Afterwards, they will orally discuss what they have discovered, and play Hangman with Shakespeare-related vocabulary
02 Becoming the Characters
Making Facebook profiles
- After reading the first part of the book, Fakebook will be used to create fake profiles and write posts on the walls of the main characters, which will be updated as the story progresses
03 Speaking and Reading: The News
Talking About What's Happened So Far
- After reading the first part of the story, students will also read this fake news article that retells the events up to now, analysing its vocabulary, and making a glossary - Then they will discuss in groups their points of view on Romeo and Juliet's dilemma and their families' attitudes, as well as writing them down for future use
04 Listening: Taylor Swift's "Love Story"
Working with the lyrics of a song
- When they have finished reading the story, the students will work on the lyrics from Taylor Swift's song "Love Story", completing the gaps or choosing the correct word - Afterwards, they will discuss the differences between the tragic outcome of Romeo and Juliet and this happier version
05 Working with TimeLime
Putting these tragic events in chronological order
- As a means of organising all the events that took place in the story, the students will make in groups a timeline detailing everything that happened in Romeo and Juliet - Then they will exchange their timelines with other groups so as to compare what they included and how they outlined it
06 Writing: Letter to an Editor
Collaborative writing of a semi-formal text
- In pairs and using Google Docs, the students will write a letter to the editor of the fake newspaper they read before, giving their opinion on the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet - They will begin by brainstorming ideas together in class, then writing a first draft on Google Docs that will be shared with the teacher, who will comment and correct it, and a final version will be produced
07 Final Task: A Radio Show
Recording a radio show on SoundCloud
- As a closing task, the students will record a radio show in groups on SoundCloud as if they were reporting on what happened in Verona - They will read some of the letters from other classmates and then have a rounding-off discussion regarding the plot and the characters, as well as their classmates' opinions
