why and how

For the classroom teacher, they are valuable for five reasons:
- They can save us time.
- They can save paper.
- They provide a link to mobile devices that help students do their homework or tasks easily.
- They are motivating for the students as they take part in activities actively
- They help balance different learning styles and the pace of individual learning
The steps to follow when designing QR Treasure Hunt or Scavenger Hunt. Step 1: Preparation: Get your questions and answers ready; Make bigger or smaller versions of photocopies depending on where and how you want to place them; cut them and place them before students see where you put them. Step 2: Make sure the students are arranged into teams prior to the activity so that students without mobile devices are not disadvantaged.
Make it clear that the Treasure Hunt will feed directly into their "Mystery" task Step 3: Give them a limited period of time so that they can work hard to accomplish their goal through collaboration with team mates. Step4: Use the information for a meaningful class activity.
What are other ideas to create QR Challenge?
Warnings:
We know students ARE using cell phones to cheat. However, they used paper and pen before cell phones, therefore, different strategies can be used to prevent cheating.
- We could just take cell phones out and have them on our desk unless they need them for a classroom activity.
- When it is time for a test, they put their cell phones in a box on the teacher's desk and get them back afterwards.
- We could teach them how to use them effectively for learning purposes: checking vocabulary, preparing online vocab journals, doing research....etc. This kind of training may take a long time so we need to be persistent and patient.
Cell phones and mp3 players provide us valuable links to the pockets and minds of the students. QR codes are a great tool to involve students and mixed ability groups in class activities actively.
