General Description

What does he look like?

To ask about somebody's appearance, we use the verb look like (parecerse, parecer que..) We ask, for example:

  • what do you look like?
  • what does your brother look like?
  • what does Johny Depp look like?
  • what do they look like?

General Description

Use to be and to have

To answer that question, use the verb to be or the verb to have (tener) See these examples:

  • I am quite tall and average weight (height/ weight- altura/peso)
  • He isn't very tall; he is good-looking. (height/ face-opinion)
  • I have short brown hair.
  • He has a beard and a moustache.
  • She has blue eyes and long blonde hair.

General Description- HEIGHT- WEIGHT

To ask about height (altura): How tall are you? / How tall is he/she?To ask about weight (peso): How much do you weigh? / How much does he/she weigh?

First, see the examples:

  • He's (is) very tall
  • My sister's (is) medium height
  • I am quite short.
  • He isn't fat / overweight, he's well-built
Now look at the pictures and try to describe them:

Modifying adjectives

Remember! We can add a modifier before the adjective, to add a degree.

See the examples:

  • This actor's very attractive; that actress is attractive too.
  • I think Johny Depp and Penelope Cruz are quite good-looking.
  • Jack Nicolson isn't very handsome. He's a bit ugly.
  • She's really beautiful.

Now look at the pictures and try to describe them:

With the verb to be we also describe age:How old are you? How old is he/she? How old are they?

  • She is only 16, she's a teenager
  • They are very young, they study at university.
  • My sister is middle-aged, shes 47.
  • That man over there is old (but more polite: that man is an elderly person)
  • I don't know his age exactly, but he's about 30
  • He is in his forties (40s)
  • She is in her fifties (50s)

Using the verb to have:

When we describe a person, we use the veb have to describe:

  • HAIR
  • EYES
  • FACE
  • SKIN
  • other characteristics: A BEARD, A MOUSTACHE, FRECKLES, etc
  • eg. She has blonde hair and green eyes
  • He has blue eyes, long dark hair and a beard
  • I have short brown curly hair and brown eyes too. I have fair skin and a round face.

Using the verb to have:

We can describe hair saying:

  • How long is it? ( short, medium -lenght / shoulder- length, long)
  • What colour is it? ( blonde /fair, light browm, dark brown, grey, black, red...)
  • What kind is it? ( straight, curly, wavy)

You could also use to be + possessive adjectives to describe hair, eyes, skin, etc. See the example: She has long brown hair or Her hair is long and brown. He has green eyes or His eyes are green

To have - to have got : the same meaning (tener)

  • They have got a beard

To have - to have got- differences in grammar

To have got- it does not need an auxiliary

  • I haven't got blue eyes
  • he/she / it hasn't got short hair
And the questions:
  • Have you got blue eyes? Yes, I have.
  • Has she got short hair? No, she hasn't.

  • I don't have blue eyes
  • he/she / it doesn't have short hair
And the questions:
  • Do you have blue eyes? Yes, I do.
  • Does she/he have short hair? No, she doesn't.
