Caesar's invasions of Britain
- Invasions of Britain was part of Gallic wars
- Caesar claimed that, Britons aided Gauls during his conquest of Gaul
- There have been 2 invasions: 55 and 54 BC
- First invasion was unsuccessful: only gain was beachhead on the coast
- Second invasion was successful Romans installed a king, Mandubracius

- Standard bearers wore animal skins over their helmets, with the upper jaw resting on the helmet.

- August 55 BC - they landed in Kent
- 41 AD - planned Roman invasion fails to take place
- 43 AD - the start of the final Roman conquest (=dobytí)
- 43 AD - battle by the River Medway - romans won
- it lasted about 4 years to gain control over souther England
- 30 years to conquer all of the West country amd valleys (=údolí) of Wales
- 60 AD - they attacked the island of Mona - whole centre of druids
- druids cursed (=proklít) them, women dressed on black screamed abuse and warriors hurled spears (=vrhnout kopí)
- The Romand slaughtered (=porazit) them and burned down the sacred groves of oak trees
The Romans sometimes used elephants to trample the enemy in battle. The emperor had some brought to Britain to impress the natives.
Resisting the invaders
Many tribes tried to resist the Romans. It took about four years for the invaders to gain control over southern England and about 30 years for them to conquer all of the West Country and valleys of Wales.
The Britons fought bravely, but the Roman troops were better equipped, trained and highly disciplined.

Rebels and conquerors
- When the Romans were attacking Mona, they had to march back to southeastern Britain (rebellion was breaking out)
- Queen of the Iceni, Boudicca led it
- When Boudicca´s husband died, the Romans had broken their word
- The tribes joined Boudicca
- Colchester and London were destroyed
- Boudicca took her own life
- AD 70 the Romans had control of the north
- AD 84 they defeated the tribes of Southern Scotland
‘They make a wilderness and call it peace.’
Conclusion
- Romans succeed in conquering Britain, Wales and Cornwall
- Scotland proved to be impossible to conquer so Romans had to build Hadrian Wall (separates Britain from Scotland)
- Romans build roads, cities (London, Manchester, York), sewage systems, brought calendar
- The Romans remained in Britain from 43 AD to 410
- 410 Romans left to defend crumbling empire
