Once Upon a Time by Nadine Gordimer
CreativeThinker
Compassionate Citizen
The narrator is being a creative thinker when she describes in huge detail how scared she feels when she hears the creaking. On page 12, on lines 39 to 42, she states "The misbeats of my heart tailed off like the last muffled flourishes on one of the wooden xylophones made by the Chopi and Tsonga..."
The rioters and thieves that lived in the city where the man, his wife, and their little boy lived were not compassionate citizens because they assaulted houses and hurt people. On lines 84 to 87, the narrator describes " The riots were suppressed, but there were many burglaries in the suburb an somebody's housemaid was tied up and shut in the cupboard by thieves."
Theme
A possible theme to this short story could be: The places that seem the safest to you might turn out to bethe places were you can more easily get hurt.
Proficient Communicator
Confident Individual
The narrator is being a proficient communicator when she explains into detail how the house security system where the man, the wife, and the little boy lived worked. "They were inscribed in a medical benefit society...insured against fire, flood damage and subscribed to the local Neighborhood Watch...," the narrator says on lines 59 to 65.
The man and his wife are not being confident individuals when they do whatever they are told to protect their house instead of doing what fits them best. On lines 127 to 130, the husband says "The housemaid is right. Take heed of her advice. You only encourage the intrutors with your bread and tea. They are looking for their chance."
