POETIC DIVICES

What are Poetic Divices?

Let's start with some of the divices that can be used to create rhythm incuding repetition, syllable variation, and rhyming. In poetry repetition is repeating words, phares, or lines.

Metaphor -

It is a comparison between two things that replaces the word or name for one object with that of another

; Eg-Poem- How Beautiful Is The Rain"with more than their wonted noise" By- H.W Longfellow

It is an easy way to compare two things, so examples of simile poems include any poem that makes comparision using words 'like' or 'as'

SIMILES

: Eg- Poem- Naming of Cats " You may think at first I'm as mad as hatter" By T.S Eliot

It is a fegurative language technique where an object or an idea is given human characteristics or qualities

PERSONIFICATION

: Eg- Poem- The sick rose"O Rose thou are sick " By William Blake

It is a stylistic literary device identified by repeated sound of the first convonant in a series of multiple words

Alliteration

: Eg- Poem- Rime of the Ancient Mariner"For the sky and the sea and the sea and the sky" By S.T Coleridge

Repitition

: Eg- Poem- Ash-Wednesday"Because I do not hope to turn again Because I do not hope Because I do not hope to turn" By T.S Eliot

It is a literary device that repeats the same words a few times to make an idea clearer

Poems are found in poems where writting appeals to senses.

IMAGERY

: Eg- Poem- Summer Night" Nor waves the cypress in the palace walk" By Jim Jacobs, Warren Casey

It is a line or group of lines which gets repeated at specific movements in the poem.

REFRAIN

: Eg- Poem- Moon-Wind"In utter , utter stillness Your conder shivers out In utter , utter stillness While you stand in the streets..." By Ted Hughes

RHYME

It is the similarity of ending words between two words.

: Eg- Poem- Daffodils " Besides the lake, beneath the trees , Fluttering and dancing in the breeze" By Willian Wordsworth
