Assimilation

Elison

Omission of one or more sounds, such as syllables or words in speech. This is done to make the language easier to say, and faster.

Examples:

Word IPA after elision comfortable /ˈkʌmftərbəl/ (rhotic English), /ˈkʌmftəbəl/ (non-rhotic English) laboratory /ˈlæbrətɔri/ (American English), /ləˈbɒrətri/ (British English) temperature /ˈtɛmpərtʃər/, /ˈtɛmprətʃə/ family /ˈfæmli/ vegetable /ˈvɛdʒtəbəl/, /ˈvɛtʃtəbəl/ fifth /ˈfɪθ/ him /ɪm/ going to /ˈɡənə/ (gonna) itis, it has /ɪts/ (it's) I have /aɪv/ (I've) isnot /ˈɪzənt/ (isn't)

Flap T

Are you aware of the different sound of /t/? Read situations when flap T is pronounced: · flap T is between two vowels, · flap T is with an ɚ sound either before it, after it or before and after it, · flap T is spelled with double T, · flap T is before an unstressed L sound · it’s between two sounds

Examples:

  • Later
  • Little
  • Letter
  • Water
  • Quarter
  • Ninety
  • Later at the meeting.
  • Little about the marketing.
  • Writing a letter.
  • The waiter brought water.
  • Quarter inch in diameter.
  • Eighty or Ninety percent.

Be careful!!!

True T

As in talk, to, terrible, talk, true, stop, return. This occurs at the beginning of the words (alone or with other consonants – st, tr, str) or in the middle of the words at the beginning of a stressed syllable.

Syllabic sound:

T = Silence When after N

When T comes after N, the T sound is dropped in many words.

a T should be fast and soft or barely heard at all.

Examples:

interview, interstate, international, wanted, don't know, printer, enter, twenty

Linking:

When two vowel sounds meet, we tend to insert an extra sound which resembles either a / j /, / w / or / r / , to mark the transition sound between the two vowels, a device referred to as intrusion. For example: · Intruding / r/ The media / r /are to blame. Law(r)andorder. · Intruding / j / I / j / agree. They / j /are here! · Intruding / w/ I want to/ w/eat. Please do/ w/it.

Assimilation

The word assimilation means to join, and become part of, a different large group. When certain sounds are followed by the word “you”, linking and reduction occurs together, and a completely different sound is produced. This is called assimilation.

Examples:

“t” & you = /tʃu/ (tchou) or /tʃə/ (tcha) can’t you meet you “d” & you = /dʒu/ (djou) or /dʒə/ (dja) did you would you

Intonation Patterns

When we make questions, we use two different intonations: Rising intonation (Yes/No questions) Are you a Chemist? Falling intonation (Information questions) Where do you study?
